just joking..
this is the eye of my pet starling, Flicka..
i took this while she was sunning under her favorite lamp. she kinda goes into this birdy trance when she suns, so i was able to get the camera really really close without her caring.. =D

Flicka is a starling that my husband and i found cold and dehydrated on the sidewalk last May. We took her in and fed her (thanks to all the help on Starling Talk). We wanted to raise her for release, but unfortunantly i had to force feed her and she imprinted on me pretty quickly. When a bird imprints on a human they grow up thinking that they ARE human and as a result find it almost impossible to relate to other birds. This is why it is quite bad to release an imprinted bird as their chances of surviving on their own in the wild is about 2-5%. Because of this we decided to keep Flicka and raise her as our companion. She is an extremely intelligent little thing, and quite opinionated as well! What mommy has Flicka MUST get, no matter the methods used to aquire it. I love her dearly

you can read all about her baby days with us, as well as her older starling pal Bird-bird (his story is on the website) here =D

awww lovely shot. how nice that she let you take it! my Clarice can be a pain in the butt when she sees the camera coming. I have to ask, do you still have her? I looked through your gallery and didn't see any more pictures of her in it

sadly I don't have her or Bird-bird any longer. :( I have 4 cats and it was getting too difficult to juggle them and birds while maintaining my own sanity. I found a local wildlife rehabber who also has a pet starling so she was able to adopt both my babies and give them a home and a new friend. Last I heard, Flicka was stealing popcorn from them while they watched tv at night. :giggle:

I do miss them both a lot though. Every time I hear starlings singing outside I get a little melancholy.

Weren't you on the Starling Talk message boards? Clarice sounds familiar!

that's sad, but I understand. we have two cats, one who gets along with the bird wonderfully [link] and one who has a hard time resisting the urge to practice hunting. I imagine with more cats we wouldn't be able to manage them and the bird too. I'm glad to hear that you were able to find your little darlings a good home!

I don't think that I actually joined the message board. however, that site was so helpful!! I know that I came across another Clarice the starling on here, though the poor little thing met an untimely death (I feel so badly for her human parents). I think that people probably have a hard time resisting it... well, at least people who've watched Hannibal.

awww! are you going to keep them?
the forums at starlingtalk.com are really great if you ever have any questions about raising them or if you find you need to adopt them out!

i ended up having to adopt Flicka and Bird-bird out to someone else as it was getting really hard having birds and cats in an apartment. i miss her so much! :(

Yes I will keep them & it's at starlingtalk where I found you & that must have been very hard giving them up I love mine so much they make me laugh when I have had a bad day mine drives my service dog nuts when I let them out to exercise & they walk all over her but I don't take no chances with my cat though I don't think he would eat them but he might play with them to rough.

what a beautiful animal and an even more amazing story!
your friend Flicka (not a horse), looks like a page in a
haute-couture fashion magazine - i'd love to have a room
that mirrored her colors palette.

I have raised starlings as well--they make great pets, and can even be taught to talk apparently. Your shot of "The Eye of the Flicka" is well composed and the detail is great!

yes, they can. I have one that says "Baby Bird", "Baby Birdie", "bitty baby birdie" (ect), "Why hello", "Hello", and sings along with Disney movies (her favorite is The Aristocats) it's really cute. she also babbles a bit (as in an indistinct mimic of human speech)
